Mike Francesa: 20 years of making a living being an idiot

On WFAN earlier today while dropping off Hannibal at Mosholu Pkwy, Mike Francesa essentially said:

The Mets have collapsed 2 years in a row, and David Wright has shown that he is tentative. He hasn't shown me that he's capable of being a leader for this team. And don't gimme the bullpen. This team has choked from start to finish.

OK, well, I guess David Wright really has sucked the past two Septembers. It's all his fault.

David Wright
September 2007

.352/.432/.602
20 RBI
0.69 WPA

September 2008
.340/.416/.577
21 RBI
0.71 WPA

Seriously, how does Francesa get away with this garbage? David Wright has added to the Mets' chances to win each September. And overall, if you want to go by clutch, in 2007 David Wright hit .324/.413/.618 in high leverage situations. In 2008, he hit .324/.420/.477.

"Don't gimme the bullpen..."? You don't believe that the bullpen bears the brunt of the responsibility for their collapse? The Mets' bullpen cost the team approximately 1.72 wins in September according to WPA. So, in other words, with a better bullpen, the Mets win about 2 more games and they win the Wild Card! David Wright is the last person to blame for this.

You don't even need WPA or Leverage Index to prove this. The Mets' bullpen had an ERA of 4.25 for the season, good for 23rd in MLB. Their bullpen is horrendous. David Wright isn't. David Wright kicks ass, and hopefully someday he kicks yours, Francesa.
